Music by Sir Arthur S. Sullivan
Book by Sir Francis C. Burnand
Based on the play “Box and Cox” by Mr. John Madison Morton
First produced May 16, 1866 in London, England

“Cox and Box” is one of Sullivan’s first works, and predates the famous operettas he wrote with Sir William S. Gilbert. An extremely tuneful if rather silly romp, it was often performed as a curtain-raiser by the old D’Oyly Carte Opera Company in an extremely abbreviated form. This production is the first to restore the script and the score to its original glory, thus honoring the intentions of the composer.
